The challenge
The ASDA store at Frome had been experiencing severe water ingress to areas holding perishable stock for a number of years. The existing single-ply membrane had reached the end of its serviceable life and there were high levels of blistering coupled with splits to the membrane at lap joints.
Additionally, during periods of heavier rainfall, the roof experienced levels standing water and the single ply was starting to show evidence of degradation.
The solution
Following extensive testing of the failing single-ply, Triflex ProTect was specified to overlay the membrane. Triflex ProTect is a cold liquid applied, seamless waterproofing system, ideally suited for the overlay of single-ply. Given that Triflex ProTect utilises methyl methacrylate resin technology, the system is hydrolysis resistant - a benefit particularly important in zero pitch applications where there is every likelihood of standing water.
A further advantage of Triflex ProTect is that it is an exceptionally fast curing solution and even at low temperatures, there is no significant extension of cure times. Works were carried out within an extremely short time-scale and weather windows optimised.
During works, there was also a need to raise plant and electrical cable trays at roof level and apply the Triflex ProTect system beneath these inaccessible areas. Triflex ProDetail was used to the support plinths and in complex areas, Triflex ProFibre was adopted.
Service walkways were introduced to the completed roof area using a Triflex anti-slip solution in a contrasting Terracotta colour. This served to also improve the visual aesthetics of roof whilst also providing clear traffic paths for personnel using the roof to carry out any necessary maintenance.
The roof area is now watertight and has been underwritten with a 20-year water tightness warranty.
