The importance of durable roof walkway systems

For safe access to a roof, whether it's for inspection, maintenance or repair, a coloured anti-slip coating system should be considered.

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, state that consideration must be given to those maintaining a structure. As part of that maintenance, roof access will be required and the safety of those getting to and traversing the roof must be considered. The inclusion of an anti-slip walkway can help designers and building owners achieve this.

Today, with ever increasing amounts of plant and photovoltaic systems installed on flat roofs, access to these spaces may now be more frequent too. Liquid roofing and walkway systems can offer a range of colours and can be used for signage, walkways and to demarcate dangerous areas such as the roof perimeter or around rooflights.

Anti-slip properties

A system that provides high levels of anti-slip resistance should be considered. To ensure the safety of anyone accessing the roof, a roofing solution with a low slip potential should be implemented to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls. Whether this is a defined walkway or consideration of the whole roof finish options are available to lower the risk in this dangerous environment.

How liquid roofing systems can help

Cold liquid roofing solutions offer fast waterproofing, with no need for hot works and are typically applied quickly and efficiently. Rapidly curing, providing impact and abrasion resistant solutions that offer a high retention of PTV over time does not mean that installation times are compromised. Triflex PMMA resin-based systems can be rainproof in just 30 minutes and fully cure within 60 minutes, even in winter temperatures.

Providing anti-skid and high slip resistance is imperative to the safety of anybody using the walkways on a roof. As well as a range of bright colours for demarcation and wayfinding, Triflex liquid roofing systems also offer a number of anti-slip variants designed to handle high levels of foot traffic. Walkways that are clearly defined can offer safe passage and movement throughout the area. In addition to serving as an important safety measure, Triflex anti-slip solutions can also enhance the visual aesthetics of the roof.

Triflex ProTect offers a choice of two finishes, meaning not only can they provide tough and durable waterproofing but incorporate demarcation for walkways to suit the level of expected foot traffic. Both solutions can be applied locally or entire roof areas to provide a reduced slip potential, and come in over 50 colours.

Triflex ProTect HD: the incorporation of quartz into the system provides a robust heavy duty finish perfect for heavier foot traffic, delivering an indicitive PTV of 75.

Triflex ProTect with anti-skid finish: anti-skid granules are incorporated into the finish delivering a PTV of approximately 61.
